What is Dry Needling and Is It Right for You?

Dry needling is one of the techniques our osteopaths use to help release tight, overactive muscles — and it's often a question patients have before trying it for the first time.

 What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling involves inserting very fine needles into specific points within a muscle, often targeting "trigger points" — small, tight knots that can cause pain both locally and in other areas of the body. Despite involving needles, it's distinct from acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles — dry needling is grounded in Western anatomical and neuromuscular understanding.

What Conditions Can It Help With?
Dry needling is commonly used for tight muscles contributing to neck and shoulder tension, lower back pain associated with muscle tightness, headaches linked to muscular tension, and sports-related muscle tightness or cramping.

 What Does It Feel Like?
Most people feel a brief sensation as the needle is inserted, sometimes followed by a deep ache or muscle twitch — this is a normal response indicating the trigger point has been engaged. Mild soreness afterward, similar to post-exercise soreness, is common and usually settles within a day or two.

 Is It Right for You?
Dry needling isn't suitable for everyone, and your osteopath will discuss whether it's appropriate for your specific situation as part of your treatment plan. It's often used alongside other techniques like soft tissue massage and joint mobilisation rather than as a standalone treatment.

 Curious About Dry Needling?
If you're interested in whether dry needling could help with your specific concern, our team can discuss this with you during your assessment.
